Did you know?

There are thirteen ways to spell the 'o' sound in French.

Salut! French is the world's ninth most widely-used language, spoken by more than 200 million people. It is the second most widely-learned foreign language after English, and can take you all over the world—from Africa to Switzerland, Canada to Monaco, and the Seychelles.

French can be relatively easy to learn, but difficult to speak well. There's an old adage that bad French comes across as much worse than bad Spanish, bad Italian, or bad German. The native French ear and French attitude are notoriously unforgiving. Perhaps it would not do for a doorway to such richness in culture and the arts to be too easily accessible...

The best part about living in Los Angeles is...

Living by the ocean.

Recommend a place to visit where French is the native language, and tell us why you like it.

I love Annecy and its beautiful lake in the French Alps. Known as the 'Venice of the Alps,' Annecy is a graceful jumble of medieval canals and alleys dominated by a castle once home to the Counts of Geneva. The town's namesake lake has crystal-clear waters which make it the cleanest in Europe. All this is set against a backdrop of the Alps.

What French film or musical artist do you recommend students watch or listen to?

'Les Intouchables.'

What most surprises your students about French?

The exceptions to nearly all grammar rules. :-)

What one thing would you like your students to know about you?

I was born and raised in Paris but my mother was German and my father was Dutch.

The best part about living in Los Angeles is...

Living in a cosmopolitan, multicultural and vibrant city.

Recommend a place to visit where French is the native language, and tell us why you like it.

In L.A.: 'Monsieur Marcel.' Everybody speaks French. Great atmosphere!

What French film or musical artist do you recommend students watch or listen to?

Watch the classics: 'The 400 Blows' and 'Breathless.' Listen to Françoise Hardy's songs on Pandora.

What most surprises your students about French?

The similarity between English and French... except in pronunciation!

What one thing would you like your students to know about you?

I'm not a Parisian! I am originally from the Loire valley, where the best French is spoken... :-)

The best part about living in Los Angeles is...

The weather, of course. It feels like summer all year long and every day is a sunny day. I love it!

Recommend a place to visit where French is the native language, and tell us why you like it.

Where I'm from: Nice and the French Riviera. The weather is similar to L.A., the water is warm and beaches are beautiful. And its only one hour away from the Alps. The culture, the landscape and of course the food, everything looks, feels and tastes Fantastic!

What French film or musical artist do you recommend students watch or listen to?

I encourage everyone to watch 'Amelie' in French with the subtitles. First because it takes place in the beautiful streets of Paris. Then because it's a feelgood movie that is fun, romantic and inventive.

What most surprises your students about French?

That a lot of words are similar to English because they share the same Latin root. But be careful of the 'Faux Amis' (fake friends); there are always exceptions in French. Some words are similar but don't mean the same thing. Ha-ha!

What one thing would you like your students to know about you?

That I traveled around the world, lived in many different countries, and speak three languages. I'm also passionate about art and music.

The Beverly Hills Lingual Institute is the premier French language school in Los Angeles, fostering a dedicated student body and a rich, supportive atmosphere for learning French.

Private (pick schedule)

We offer semi-private French classes or private French lessons for any level of French.

Some students prefer private lessons instead of a scheduled class, or occasionally take private classes to augment their existing, scheduled group course.

Private classes are more flexible than Group classes. They are tailored to specific learning and scheduling needs. They can be useful if a student's language knowledge is uneven, if a more intensified study program is needed, or if privacy is a concern.

With our large staff of native speakers, we can schedule private lessons in most languages.

Private lessons are available in packages of:

  • 4 classes (80-minutes each)

  • 8 classes (80-minutes each)

  • 12 classes (80-minutes each)

Or, if you are enrolled in a group class, your private lesson can be scheduled individually.

Please write us or call (323) 651-5000 to schedule your private class.

Why Learn French?

France has an allure and a 'je ne sais quoi' that has been replicated by no other country or language. French is the language of Victor Hugo, Molière, Edith Piaf, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Zinedine Zidane; and France, the home of Paris, St. Tropez, and Chamonix.

Whether it's fashion or wine, cinema or l'entrecôte, French chic is aspired to throughout the world. France is an extremely popular destination for holiday makers and second home owners.

With their fearsome reputation for only speaking French, if you want to communicate with the locals then learning the basics is a must for any Francophile.

If you are considering learning or brushing up on your French language skills, you have come to the right place. The Beverly Hills Lingual Institute has been teaching French for more than 30 years, earning an esteemed reputation in Los Angeles.

Mastering a new language can change your life.

Spending time studying an unfamiliar alphabet, practicing different sounds, and generally striving to master a foreign language like French has been proven to have a positive effect on the learner's mind. Studies show that adults learning new languages stimualte similar brain parts as children learning you speak. You'll find it easier to learn and remember new things, and you'll likely enjoy the ability to hold more things in short-term memory.

Bilingual individuals often demonstrate increased open-mindedness, creativity, and approachability compared to those who speak only one language. Learning a new language extends beyond acquiring linguistic skills; it cultivates new sensibilities and a broadened perspective on the world. Consequently, multilingualism promotes a deeper understanding of diverse cultures and customs, fostering greater acceptance of new ideas.

The Beverly Hills Lingual Institute invites you to learn French at our award-winning school, where we are proud to offer French and more than 35 other languages.

Our language school hires and retains exceptional French teachers, eager to share their knowledge and love for their native land and the French language.

Our attractive location, on-site parking and schedule all combine to facilitate your French courses.
