The best part about living in Los Angeles is...

The weather, of course. Also, access to every type of business, entertainment, eating experience, etc. Also, it's a city that's welcoming to diversity.

Recommend a place to visit where English is the native language, and tell us why you like it.

Griffith Park Observatory. Beautiful view of city; shows and presentations about astronomy, day and night.

What English film or musical artist do you recommend students watch or listen to?

Oh! So very many! I love 'Gone with The Wind'—historical, yet unforgettable characters as well.

What most surprises your students about English?

I think, how illogical it is! As soon as you learn and master a 'rule,' then there is an exception!

What one thing would you like your students to know about you?

I am so impressed with their determination to learn and/ or improve their English skills, considering all that they have going on in their lives.

The best part about living in Los Angeles is...

The best part about living in Los Angeles is the multi-cultural experience. You can meet people from all over the world, sample delicious food from every cuisine, and become more aware of people's customs and cultures.

I would recommend visiting the Pacific Northwest. People in the Pacific Northwest have a simple, easy-to-understand accent, they are patient, the food is delicious, and the pristine nature is unparalleled. Check out my charming hometown of Port Townsend, Washington to get the perfect Pacific Northwest experience.

What English film or musical artist do you recommend students watch or listen to?

I recommend that students listen to Lady Gaga for her artistry and creative lyrics. Lady Gaga sings a wide variety of types of songs, including classic standards.

What most surprises your students about English?

My students are most often surprised at how many idiomatic expressions there are in English. Also, students often comment on how many meanings (sometimes contradictory) one word can have in English.

What one thing would you like your students to know about you?

I would like my students to know that I have a good sense of humor and I am very patient. My goal is for my students to learn in a low-anxiety environment in which they feel like they are able to take intellectual risks and progress at their own pace.

Opportunities for personal growth.

The Getty or LACMA. The docents are knowledgeable, and the art is astounding. I once had a docent who simply followed me around and volunteered information that made the visit memorable.

What English film or musical artist do you recommend students watch or listen to?

James Taylor—easy listening and easily understood. His songs transcend nationality and speak to the human heart. His lyrics are simple and true.

What most surprises your students about English?

How difficult it is and the fact that so many rules are broken with abandon and without apology. It is what it is.

What one thing would you like your students to know about you?

I think my students already know; I absolutely adore teaching and the evolution of the English language. I love seeing the light go on when a student finally understands a grammatical point.

Private English Classes

Private classes are more flexible than Group classes. They are tailored to specific learning and scheduling needs. They can be useful if a student's language knowledge is uneven, if a more intensified study program is needed, or if privacy is a concern.

With our large staff of native speakers, we can schedule private lessons in most languages.

Private lessons are available in packages of:

  • 4 classes (80-minutes each)

  • 8 classes (80-minutes each)

  • 12 classes (80-minutes each)

Or, if you are enrolled in a group class, your private lesson can be scheduled individually.

Please write us or call (323) 651-5000 to schedule your private class.

In addition to classes from Beginning to Advanced for those who are learning English, we offer Accent Reduction and Native Speaker courses.

English | Accent Reduction

Our Accent Reduction course focuses on pronunciation, stress, enunciation, diction, tonality, musicality, syntax, and articulation, through vowel and consonant exercises, work chants, tongue twisters, and readings. Individual attention is given to each student's area of difficulty.

English | Native Speaker

These classes are for those who grew up speaking English but want to improve and refine their English. Designed to give you the critical edge in English communication, they target grammar, spelling, and pronunciation.

Mastering a new language can change your life.

Spending time studying an unfamiliar alphabet, practicing different sounds, and generally striving to master a foreign language like English has been proven to have a positive effect on the learner's mind. Studies show that adults learning new languages stimualte similar brain parts as children learning you speak. You'll find it easier to learn and remember new things, and you'll likely enjoy the ability to hold more things in short-term memory.

Bilingual individuals often demonstrate increased open-mindedness, creativity, and approachability compared to those who speak only one language. Learning a new language extends beyond acquiring linguistic skills; it cultivates new sensibilities and a broadened perspective on the world. Consequently, multilingualism promotes a deeper understanding of diverse cultures and customs, fostering greater acceptance of new ideas.

The Beverly Hills Lingual Institute invites you to learn English at our award-winning school, where we are proud to offer English and more than 35 other languages.

Our language school hires and retains exceptional English teachers, eager to share their knowledge and love for their native land and the English language.

Our attractive location, on-site parking and schedule all combine to facilitate your English courses.

More About English

The English language is so mixed that it does not have a close sister language. What has remained in English of the old Anglo-Saxon grammar is of Germanic character. Most high-frequency vocabulary in modern English is Germanic. English is thus usually classified by linguists as a Germanic language, even though the Romance languages, including Latin, contribute to English about half of its vocabulary.
